The state of the economy trickles down

Told that it will be 45 minute wait to get their haircuts at the kiddie hair salon in the outdoor mall near our house, we decide to walk around. As we stroll the sidewalk, we come to the small, neighborhood toy store which, prior to entering, I explained to the kids we were only going to look and that we weren’t going to buy anything.

The store isn’t extremely busy but there are a number of families perusing the store with us. The kids rush from awesome toy to awesome toy, barely containing their glee at being so close to such wonderful pieces of molded plastic and synthetic hair.

TheMonk, spying a particularly cool yellow tractor, says out loud, “Oooh, Daddy! Look at that! That’s pretty! I want to buy that!”

Then, his face suddenly saddens and he says with a loud, matter-of-fact voice that everyone nearby can hear, “But Daddy, we can’t buy it because you don’t have any money.”

  2. Awwww, Grandmother ROCKS!!

BTW, one of DrillSgt’s. students asked him this week, “If the economy is so bad, how come I’m not feeling it.” Hmmm…interesting question, could it be that there are some still sheltering their kids (even their teenage kids) from reality?! Then we wonder why some people grow up to be President and are surprised when they learn the real cost of a gallon of gas.

    Hugs & Blessings!

  3. My kids have learned that too. We go somewhere and they ask to buy or wish to buy something but most of the time it is followed by, “But you probably don’t have the money”

  4. Ane saw a Princess & Horse combo at Costco today. Instant throes of ecstasy – until I pointed out that it was $15.49. “Do you have that money on you?” I asked.

“No, I forgot my purse,” she said. End of discussion. I love that she’s developing a concept of money. (Not that she had $15.49 in her purse anyway.)

  5. Kids are so damn smart! Ours know the same thing. That and we are really trying to teach them that they don’t get something every time they go to the store or want something. So now when they see something, they say they want it for Christmas or their birthday.
