Bri: Part Angel

TheMonk and Swee’Pea are playing quietly on the floor – each enthralled with their own particular toy. That is, until Swee’Pea decides that she has had enough of her toy and, instead, looks around for something else to entertain her. She scans the room and settles on something that looks promising. She crawls nonchalantly over to the desired object and grabs it with a quick snap of her little hands.

Having his toy snatched from his hand, TheMonk cries out. He looks to me to settle this great injustice and Swee’Pea turns to see what my reaction will be. Seeing me get up to intervene, Swee’Pea decides her best bet is to get rid of the evidence. Unfortunately, in her haste to rid herself of the incriminating object, she bonks TheMonk on the head with the toy.

TheMonk begins to cry.

As I descend on them both to remove Swee’Pea and comfort TheMonk, Swee’Pea crawls over to her crying brother. What now? Is she looking to inflict even more punishment? No. Instead she crawls over and plants a kiss on TheMonk’s forehead. This momentarily quiets TheMonk and I rub his belly as he sucks furiously on this binky to help calm himself. This works momentarily but soon he starts to cry again. Again, Swee’Pea leans over and plants a wet kiss on the top of TheMonk’s head. I smile at this sweet sight and I praise them both as I remove Swee’Pea, reminding her that she has many other toys to play with and that TheMonk was playing with that toy.

TheMonk stops crying and goes back to playing with his toy. Swee’Pea plays with some blocks nearby. As I remove myself I watch as Swee’Pea goes back over to TheMonk. I’m thinking she’s going to give him another kiss. I smile in anticipation of this very sweet moment.

Bri reaches out and takes TheMonk’s binky from his mouth. She quickly pops it into her mouth and crawls away leaving a crying TheMonk in her wake.

*Sigh.* Here we go again. “Bri! That’s TheMonk’s binky!”

  1. She knows what she wants… and what she wants, JT has. At least she didn’t bonk JT on the noggin with the binky before she stolled away.

  2. Been there, done that… I wish I could tell you that that type of thing gets better as they get older, but I can’t.

Maybe… just maybe it will be a tad different because they aren’t the same sex…

    One can hope at least.

  3. Oh man, I love that. And the sad thing is, it may take him years to learn to just take it back from her.

  5. Your poor son, he has no idea what he’s up against. But I guess this is good training for when he gets to be a teenager.

Girls, they’ll suck up to you, make you feel loved and then rob you blind. I’ve heard.

  6. At least they’re related. Around two weeks ago at the market, some random toddler walked up to my daughter, pulled out her binky and shove it in his mouth, then walked away.

There’s nothing like telling another parent “hey, your son just got cooties”….

  7. She’s a smart one! In our house it’s Locke taking Lola’s toys but he hasn’t mastered the sweet kiss diversion yet.

  8. Yup – it doesn’t get any better – although more comical at times.

My daughter used to give those same “crawl-by-slobbers” to her brother. Now, when we ask her to give him a kiss, he turns and runs in terror. I guess he remembers.

  10. my son and my nephew (who are 15 months apart) are going thru that now. they each want what the other has all the time. But then they can be so sweet to each other and give kisses and hugs…fun stuff. (well not the tears part, but i guess ya take the good with the bad)

Oh and happy late father’s day!!

  11. This is a familiar scene that is played many times for an audience of one at our house each day – that audience being me. It is usually accompained by the words, “No, baby, that’s MINE!” and followed up with a cry. Then the Munchkin will hand Baby Boy a different toy in an attempt to keep him from ratting her out. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but Mommy is always watching…

  12. I found your blog through a post daddydrama did on your article in the NY Daily News (congratulations – and I’m a lion too!). I have been reading your site at my desk crying (do you think it is obvious that I’m not focused?). You are an amazing writer and obviously you have an amazing family. Thanks for sharing your joy with the world!

  13. I am not buying a word of this tale. Where is the proof? Do you have any pictures or a video of this incident? HA! I thought not!

  14. Ha! Aren’t kids awesome! My daughter (11 months) does that to her newborn cousin every time she sees her. The thing is – she usually won’t take a pacifier. But for sho – she’ll take it if someone else has it!
