What’s in a name?

I’m beginning to feel a little left out. Many of my much admired fellow bloggers have endearing, clever nicknames for their offspring and significant others.

I mean, MetroDad has the Peanut and is married to the BossLady, Defective Yeti has Squirrely and is married to The Queen, Morphing into Mama has Tod-lar and In-Fant and is married to Husband (she hasn’t taken my suggestion of calling him The Partner), Mr. Big Dubya has (of course) Little Dubya and is married to Mrs. Big Dubya. Not-For-Profit-Dad has Boy Twin and Girl Twin and is married to the Minister of Wifely Affairs (MOWA – Best wife nickname out there, in my humble opinion) and Sarah has her Goon Squad.

I have no creativity in this department. Any ideas, folks? Come on you lurkers out there, help me out!

  1. I am just as uncreative…on our new blog it is just our names and our yet-to-be-born baby is just…well, Baby. I envy all those creative blogger folks too.

  2. Yeah um, I’m no help. I’m all about putting the names out there, and then backtracking a few months later after the damage is done. The most creative I get is disguising names with bad Spanish.

You have so many cute possibilities with having twins, although none are coming to me right now. I took their initials B&J, and I immediately thought of peanut butter and jelly, PB&J. There’s got to be a bazillion cute duos in history that you could choose from. I highly recommend that you stay away from ones like Kenny and Dolly or Bonnie and Clyde. Probably not the best, although it could be amusing considering the antics your in for. Good luck!

  3. I concur – MOWA is a wondeful wife-title!

I think the nicknames will come as the twins exert their personalities. One day, something funny will just slip out as you refer to one or both of them, and then you can use that on the blog, and so forth.

  4. I vote for “Ab-man” for the boy.

  5. I need to do the same – and you’re the one who made me realize it. I’d mentioned “my sweetie” in a post, and you thought I meant my son, when in fact, it was my partner. I need a name for him, and I can’t call him “The Partner”, because Mim will have to take that one sooner or later. Hmmm…

  6. I change my son’s nickname in almost every post. None of these are actually what I call him, though. That would be trickier for you, ’cause you have two to nickname. What do you call ‘em around the house?

  7. My problem and I have blogged on this is that my kid has too many nicknames. It helps if your kid has a name that rhymes with something or is part of a brand name.

  8. I can’t even take credit for my nickname. My husband started calling them “The Goon Squad” when I was still pregnant. It just stuck.

  9. What about “Thing 1″ and “Thing 2″ for the rugrats? (A la Dr. Seuss and the Cat in the Hat.) =)

  10. Mary, you can take “The Partner” and I’ll use “Pahtn’r” for Husband — though we’re not originally from MA, he did go to law school and then practiced out there for several years.

Matthew, when Tod-lar was born, Husband came up with “In-fant.” Then, when Tod-lar started toddling, Husband was bummed we couldn’t call him In-fant anymore. That’s when I came up with “Tod-lar” — which should be said with a deep superhero like voice. Fortunately, we were able to recycle “In-fant.”

The nicknames just have to come naturally. Just let them flow you . . . ommmmmm.

  11. Well, the titles “Boy Twin” and “Girl Twin” came about because my wife forbid me from using their real names in the bus-depot-late-at-night environment of the internet. The “MOWA” was actually my wife’s choice from several options offered. I did not think it was particularly inspired at the time, but it has grown on me.

  12. Yeah, mine are pretty uninspired…first initials. Yay.

I thought of using the “th” theme from thDad. I would be thDad, my wife would be thMom and our daughter would be thKid. Hmmmm…

  13. Well, I recommend waiting until something becomes an obvious nickname. You can’t force these things. The Queen of All She Surveys came about that way. And the princesses are so called because of their interest in all things princess’ish. I wasn’t trying to be creative, just rolling with what came along.

  14. My wife is great at nicknames and came up with Boogs and Chuckles for our children. I call her The Warden.

  15. Names, nicknames and pseudonyms…

  16. I use online pseudonyms for my boys for the same reason Not-For-Profit Dad gives: I don’t want that information available on the Internet.

I haven’t exactly thought it through, though. I just have vague fears of future child molesters googling personal information.

  17. [...] For some time I have contemplated becoming more anonymous on this blog. I even petitioned the blogosphere a ways back for some advice on what to call my two little rugrats. I did a search on famous pairs in history (unfortunately most famous male/female duos were tragic lovers or criminals) to no avail. So, I let it sit. But once again, I have been thinking it might be time to be a little less “out there” and I finally feel it’s time to take J*T* and B*r*i underground. [...]
